STUDIO PROJECT • FALL 2021
Making Language Visible is an expansive exploration and celebration of the humanist sans-serif typeface, Meta. Designed by Erik Spiekermann in 1991, it was, as he described, intended to be a “complete antithesis of Helvetica”.
The book showcases a range of typographic exercises completed during my semester-long Typography studio, including proper kerning and leading, letterform abstractions, and experiments with positive and negative space. The final chapter, titled “Sentences”, brings together these techniques in restrictive type-based layouts that demostrate a newly refined typographic sensibility.
