Kotex Redesign
PERSONAL PROJECT • FALL 2021

Kotex is a brand of menstrual hygiene products, but like many brands in this category, its packaging incorporates feminine visuals - such as pinks, purples, florals, and silhouettes of women. This approach can make shopping for essential health products uncomfortable, especially for menstruating individuals who don’t identify as women. In an interview with NBC News, transgender model and activist Kenny Ethan Jones shares:

“Having a period already causes me a lot of [gender] dysphoria, but this dysphoria becomes heightened when I have to shop for a product that is labeled as ‘women’s health’ and in most cases, is pretty and pink,”

I designed a new packaging system informed by gender neutrality. The prompt for this project was inspired by Kel Lauren’s redesign for Playtex

Current packaging

U by Kotex's packaging uses traditional feminine colors like purple and pink, with the symbol for woman (♀) in the logo. Absorbency levels are only visible on the front of the security tampons, which can be inconvenient. When reaching for a tampon or a new box, I have to pick up the entire package to check the absorbency rather than checking from above.
